Sunday June 5, on the Gulf Island Earthship Build:

I featured Camp Hugs last week, where many Volunteer Interns are choosing to camp, on the owner’s land. It’s very primitive with no amenities whatsoever. I feel very privileged with the opportunity to stay and camp with Mark, a neighbour of where the Earthship build is taking place. Mark is Off The Grid like everyone else on this this Gulf Island, however I really enjoy the intimacy of the amenities while camping here. I’ll take you on a tour of ‘Camp Sauna’, as dubbed by a fellow Intern named Brian.

Here is the pathway leading down to our morning ritual of breakfast in the Underground Cob dwelling.

His stone wall is filled with Skulls of the local Island mythical creatures dubbed ‘Geep’. A mix of Island sheep and goats that were free to roam long ago on the Island.

Sunday mornings are especially nice to relax with a leisurely breakfast, without rushing off to the build site. Here’s where we gather round the table on Cob benches for morning ‘nosh’ and conversation.

In the center of Mark’s underground Cob dining area, is a stone oven/fireplace that actually cools the room down when cooking in the summer. We’re currently using propane to cook here in the underground kitchen, while the outdoor dining area is getting built, complete with outdoor oven.

We love the Outdoor Shower, with warm and hot water once you’ve figured out the exact setting. I have yet to take a sharpie and mark the spot. As soon as the water falls off the boards into the first pond, ‘Bob’ the local big…BIG Bullfrog surfaces the pond to enjoy the waterfall. I have yet to nab a photo of him, however I don’t intend to take my camera into the shower!

However… I can share the view from the outdoor shower stall…stunning, and certainly relaxing at the end of the day. To the left, is the change room outside of the Sauna, with a dock that people jump from into the deep cool pond.

The Sauna box (behind the doors) is a great way to relax, and coming down in the morning to change into our warm dry work clothes and boots in the outer change room is also great blessing.

The wood stove portion is inside the Sauna, while the door to stoke it, is outside the Cob structure.

The new outdoor dining area is starting to come together. We’re already enjoying our Sunday nite dinners at the long tables and under the covered roof.

It’s actually quite a big space, and will be amazing once the outdoor oven, and prep area is finished.

Meanwhile, sharing a meal at this table that seats 16…is wonderful after a shower and a sauna.

A follow up to a wonderful feast, is getting ready for ‘Sunday nite Movie nite’ in Mark’s Dance Studio…an Amphitheater of Artistic Architectural proportions…a work still in progress.

Even with the couches in place, we feel dwarfed in this great structure…

We all come in our comfy clothes, and bring our creature comforts…including popcorn…with real butter! (If you were here on this off grid Gulf Island with us, you’d realize the magnitude of this luxury!)

Mark sets up his projection system, and 5.1 surround sound is surreal in this space. Mark gets electricity to run the system by releasing water from his pond and generating power via a hydro wheel.

Last but not least, here’s our amusing trek to the ‘Loo’. It’s an Outhouse positioned next to the Chicken Coop. The chickens don’t have access to the ‘load’ from the Outhouse, but the whole system is a ‘Closed Loop System’ that I won’t go into detail about here. Suffice it to say, it’s a different experience!
