I’ve decided to take the day off, it’s Sunday after all, and according to the locals, a bike ride to the South East end to ‘S. Bay’ is in order. It’s not really called S. Bay, but I’ve respected the request for privacy by the locals, and not mentioned which Gulf Island Michael Reynold’s Earthship build is on. So I start my bike ride, and it’s going to be a long one at 20km, up and down many hills. The moss everywhere has inspired me to take my iPod, and tune into classic Jethro Tull’s  ‘Songs from the Woods’.

The trees along the narrow roads are huge, and the scenery of green makes all the hills seem a little less arduous. Believe me… there are hills…and hills… and the locals told me ‘a couple of hills to start…then it’s relatively flat’. Right. Maybe if you’re in a vehicle, however my behind and knees were beginning to object after not being on a bike in 2 years.

I’m in love with all the personalized and charming Island Mailboxes I pass.

Recycling is big here on the Island, and it’s reflected in all the creativity.

Another popular sight are all the honor system Fresh Produce and Baked Goods stands.

There’s a lot of detail in the Cob facing, however the imagination and humor of other stands is equally amusing.

After about an hour into my ride, the landscape starts to change a bit, and I come across many groups of wild sheep.

One has spotted me, and is clearly not impressed.

These sheep seem to have the run of the land, and go where they please.

About an hour and a half into my bike ride, I’m beginning to doubt the directions I got from the locals, and start to wonder if I’m ever going to see the Ocean. Apparently there are more cars on this Island than people, and many of these vehicles are abandoned. Clearly. I suspect I may be lost however I forge ahead. After all, the road has to lead somewhere…

I pass the local Fire Hall…

… and begin to have a better understanding of the Island humor with naming their own roads.

Just when the calories from my morning cup of Java have just about run out, I can see it… the Ocean… I’ve made it. I’m exhausted after almost 2 hours of hills and dales… but the view is spectacular… and moody as the sky has begun to go dark with signs of rain to come.

I’m off my bike and my legs feel like jello as I make my way to the water. The wind has picked up… making the scenery even more expressive.

The rocks and natural green pathways remind me of the hills in Northern England. It’s times like these I really appreciate the diversity in the British Columbia landscape.

The sky is getting darker, and the wind is starting to whip along with a cold edge. I love it. One for the ‘Memory Bank’.

I’ve eaten my lunch, inhaled the calories… and it’s still a longggg trek back. However I have a hot shower, Sauna, Sunday Dinner and Movie Nite waiting for me at Mark’s aka Camp Sauna. Now if only my knees and ‘behind’ will oblige and get me all the way back…

Next Post…
