A member of Earthship Biotecture is cutting the arch out of the East entrance of the main house Earthship. Notice he’s wearing a pink kerchief?

Despite the fact that this Crew member is doing construction… notice the ummm…. pink shirt? It’s ‘Freaky Flamboyant Friday’, and the Crew like to change things up on the site.

Michael Reynolds calculating the level for the Earthship Black Water septic

Anyone working on an Earthship build with Michael Reynolds will see this image a lot. He’s making sure that every step is calculated to the right level.

In this case, it’s calculating the drop needed for the pipe for the Black Water Septic System.

4 Layers of clear plastic are layered on top of a layer of EPDM for the lining of the Black Water Septic System hole.

Once the hole is prepped, 4 tires are stacked, the pipe is laid in on top, and scrap Styrofoam is placed around and topped with large rock gravel.

Here’s the West entrance Airlock Can Walls I’ve been working on with a few people. These are now Packed Out and have their first layer of plaster on them. If you look at the top row of cans, you’ll notice they sweep upwards. This will make it easier to lay the bottle walls in a circular design on top.

Making it awkward is designing and laying the bottles around the switch plates and any other obstacles.

In the big room of the main house Earthship, the floor is leveled, tamped, mesh rebarred, and vapour barriered before the cement pour.

The partitions enable a more manageable pour.

Two Volunteer Interns, Stephanie and Regine are leaving us, and yes, they did the plaster prep in the Greenhouse and main rooms.

Just outside the West end Airlock Can and Bottle walls I’ve been working on, the retaining wall of tires has been pounded. This tire wall is between the main house Earthship, and the back Earth Berm of the smaller Studio Earthship.

Access to the West entrance is created by bringing the tire wall around and attached to the main house.

Another volunteer intern leaving today is Paul, from Ontario. A big thanks to Paul for all his generosity, and climbing those big trees to help me fix my tarps!
