Here’s a Monday morning overview of the main house 3 bedroom Earthship. There’s still some Greenhouse Buttresses on the right that haven’t been roofed.

New Volunteer Interns are getting instructions from the Earthship Biotecture crew for whats needed.

These Volunteer Carpenters are working on finishing the Wing Wall roofs over the main house airlocks. These two roofs also will add square footage to the overall roof Catch Water System.

Also on the roof, the interns have the opportunity to learn how to properly measure, cut, and bend the Pro-Panel sheets into ‘Metal Origami’ that will be installed as the Flashing and Ridge Caps for all the Vent Boxes, and Battery Boxes atop the roof. Let me just say, I enjoyed this part, however it definitely takes practice and experience to do it well. It’s an expensive mistake if you mess up on just one little cut or bend.

There’s a lottttttttttt of panels, ridges, overlaps, and rivets to this roofing project. I learned more than I possibly could have imagined. I also have a whole new respect for roofers working atop these slippery surfaces in the hot blazing sun. My roofing partner and I are determined to do a chocolate fondue with marshmallows up here next time it’s a sunny day.

Here’s an overview of both Earthships being built, with the smaller Studio Earthship in the foreground.

Interior main house Earthship Can Walls are starting to look massive, and impressive. They’re also getting prepped with electrical wiring at the same time.

Some of the mortar on the Can Walls has to be chipped away to make room for the incoming wires.

At this point in the Earthship build, sifting and screening dirt for smooth cement plasters is ongoing, as is the balancing act while working on the many details as in this photo of Michael Reynolds in the smaller Studio Earthship.

The Studio Earthship Greenhouse Hallway Bottle walls are also ongoing, a little added each day…

I love how these walls look with the morning light shining through.

These Solar Collectors for the Hot Water System are heavier than they look, and very awkward to get up to the Southern Roof Exposure.

At the end of the day, we interns are still discussing and sharing what we learned on the build that day.
