‘My Survivor, Island Earthship’

Photo Journal of a Gulf Island Earthship Build with Michael Reynolds

I, Monica, have signed up for a 5 week Earthship Build on a remote Island off the West Coast of British Columbia, with Michael Reynolds and his crew. Two Earthships are being built at the same time, one 3 Bedroom Global Earthship and one Global Studio Earthship. Note: this is NOT our Earthship build, but a build I’m attending.

I plan to Blog the Daily Progress of the build through Photos and Info. I hope to bring you an inside perspective of what it’s like to be on a build with Michael Reynolds and his crew, 40 willing volunteers from all over the world, the Daily Construction, and the lighter side of camping under extreme conditions.

As acting Intern Liaison/Den Mother on this build, I have already been faced with the challenges surrounding this build. The undeveloped nature of the Island presents a very primitive camping situation.

There is NO existing building on this site, NO electricity on the Island, NO campfires, NO markets, NO vehicles allowed to the island, foot traffic only, we’re still sorting out the issues surrounding good drinking water, and getting to the Island makes ‘Planes Trains and Automobiles’ look like a walk in the park.

Follow me on ‘My Survivor’ five week adventure, my Journal Blogging all STARTS  HERE , and is sure to inform and entertain. You can then follow along in chronological order to see all the posts for this 5 Week Build.

Island Earthship Build: Week 5. Day 33. ‘Finished Construction, Clean Up and Celebration’

It’s here…this is it… THE LAST DAY on this 5 week double Earthship build!!! Last minute details like hanging doors, and leveling out the Main House West entrance for the final cement pour… Since today is the last official Workday on the build… it’s time for a major Clean Up. That means the Earthship Biotecture Crew has to sort out their personal tools from the massive pile of organized chaos that’s left… and make everything look GOOD for the Locals who are coming this afternoon for a looky-loo and celebrate a grand finish with us.

So thankfully we have the opportunity to grab a morning Espresso at Cafe Rousselle, courtesy of some fellow industrious interns over at ‘Camp Hugs’… Not only do they Recycle at ‘Cafe Rouselle’… They’ve also been growing Sprouts using recycled Blue Board. These sprouts will be transplanted to the Earthship indoor Greywater Planters any day now…

Island Earthship Build: Week 5. Day 30. ‘…and By Night a Solstice Island Rave’

Seems we’ve been invited to a local tradition… the ‘Island Solstice Party’, taking place on the extreme other end of the Gulf Island. After 4 and a half weeks on this remote, off grid Island, we’ve been embraced by the Islanders and included in this mythical yearly tradition. A buffet table was laden with everything from Salad to a plethora of goodies. Curiously, I was told the only ‘non-magical’ food on the table ‘safe’ to eat was the Chocolate Cake.

Island Earthship Build: Week 5. Day 30. ‘By Day the Race for the Finish is on…’

Volunteer Interns have been working hard to meet this week’s deadline. It’s certainly been an Ant Hill of activity, especially when several different finishes are required in close proximity. I’ve viewed it as ‘Organized Chaos’, however the job gets done. Here the can wall is still being built, while the Tire Wall below is still being ‘Packed Out’ and simultaneously the ‘Brown Coat’ of finish plaster is applied. The West Wing Can Wall of the Main House Earthship is really starting to come along, and ties in nicely to the Rammed Earth Tire Wall that’s ‘Battered Back’ and used as a retaining/supporting wall against the back berm of the smaller Studio Earthship to the right.

Island Earthship Build: Week 5. Day 29. ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’

The Can Wall has really progressed. You’ll notice how far down the end Can Wall stack on the right goes down into the ground, and that’s because in some places the tire wall had to go down as far as 6 rows below floor level to reach ‘Undisturbed Earth’ , which is necessary for a solid Rammed Earth Tire Wall… and No… it’s not a ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’… rather a Volunteer Intern emerging from the bowels of the…

Getting the myriad of jobs done on an Earthship build means you have to get creative with how you get it done, in a way that everyone can still work around you. I took some video which I’ll post when I get back of the anthill of activity, with up to 3 people working in the same 4 x 4 foot space. Island Earthship Build: It’s All in the Prep and the Packing

Camping, 5 weeks on a remote Island, with no amenities, and volunteering/working as Interns alongside Michael Reynolds and his crew for an Earthship build, will be an adventuresome challenge. It’s All in The Prep and The Packing. It’s tough organizing for a camping situation and trying to pack for the many contingencies that may arise. There’s usually a tug of war between packing light with only necessities, and the ‘what if’ monkey thoughts that put you in fear of having to do without in miserable conditions.
