There’s aluminum in baking powder?

Sometimes I feel like the last one to know. Since Aluminum doesn’t belong in our bodies I went on a little cruise via google to see what the options are so when making pancakes or muffins I don’t have that to worry about.

Beating egg whites stiff in place of baking powder will do the same job, or you can mix cream of tartar with sodium bicarbonate in a 2:1 ratio. (2 tsp of this mix should do for 4 cups of flour)

Happily there are some manufacturers out there whose products are Aluminum Free and they are: Bob’s Red Mill Double Action Backing Powder Or Rumford brand named after Count Rumford. (sorry…who?)    Or Magic Baking Powder (which I was raised on) only sold in Canada.

Since baking powder doesn’t last forever buy small amounts. This is one time where buying in bulk is not a good idea. Store it in an airtight container in the cupboard and make sure it is not exposed to moisture or air. If you’re wondering if your powder still has it’s thunder you can add a tsp to a 1/2cup boiling water and if it boils harder it’s a go. If notta happens it’s time to toss it.

For more information about baking powder this is a pretty cool link:

Acidophilus + Herbals

Oma’s buckwheat Noodles and Scrambled Eggs + Tea

Blueberry Muffin + Coffee
