The Candida Directory and Cookbook …a book review.

The book was written by Helen Gustafson (a former sufferer of Candida) and Maureen O’Shea (a Nutritional Consultant) to assist people by putting together an elegant recipe book for this particular cleanse.

I for one appreciate the segment of the book devoted to a 3 stage process to help plan the great cure against bad ‘Yeasties’. I also appreciated the in depth ‘Symptom Chart’ made available for us to chart our progress from one stage to the next making it easier to identify improvements along the road.

Last but not least they also included a chapter on both Pharmaceutical (if you are into that sort of thing) and Herbal Approaches to conquering the beast for those who are unfamiliar with natural methods.

All good news.

I found myself however disappointed with the differences in information between my Naturopaths’ advice and that given by the authors. It was somewhat confusing for me to assess the conflicting dietary advice given that my Naturopath was far stricter with the ingredient list. Therefore, in the end I was unable to take advantage of the recipes in the book as many of the ingredients they allowed…my Naturopath did not – rendering the menu less than useful which is why I bought the book in the first place.

My all over feelings towards this book is that it will make your life a hell of a lot easier where preparing a weekly menu is concerned, but only if you agree with their assessment of what to eat and what not to eat on this cleanse.  I highly recommend you run the menu past a Naturopathic practitioner to gather their input before you make that choice however,  because it does no good to be on a ‘cleanse’ if you are eating foods that shouldn’t be on that cleanse.  Bless their hearts for writing this book and helping others on their healing journey.

Ceragem Infra Red Thermal Massage Bed

As hobbits we see the value in Massage as a form of Therapy that helps with the stress of everyday ordinary life. We purchased this Infra Red bed to address the aches and pains that come up for both of us as a form of maintenance especially as we get older. The list of improvements that people say they experience is impressive, but nothing beats taking it out for a spin. We love ours!

The Transition Town Initiative, an Effort Towards Sustainable Community Living

In spring of 2011 a small group of people in 100 Mile House, B.C. threw together a pot luck dinner and assembled in a private home to meet and learn from Tamara Sunsong of Victoria’s ‘In Transition’ Group to talk about ‘transitioning away from oil dependence.’
A grassroots movement the world over called ‘Transitioning Towns’ is taking this peak oil thing seriously. The objective is for neighbours to come together to share ideas and create action plans to deal with the times to come.

Passive Solar Gain Technologies For a More Sustainable Home

Diagram illustrating Passive Solar Gain using the Sun and Architectural Design for a Sustainable HomeUtilizing the sun can go a long way to freely and efficiently heating your home during the daylight hours. A building that is intentionally sited to Face the Southern Exposure taking into account the arc of the sun and the maximum exposure of daylight hours will enjoy Free Heating. Passive Solar is a beautiful thing. The direct heat or light of the sun can be captured and utilized. Here are some designs that need only be placed in the direct line of the sun to get the job done.

Rattle Snakes and Getting Creative with Your Tent

We were surrounded by Rattle Snake holes. Where to pitch our tent? We realized we’d need to get creative if we had any hopes of getting any sleep during the night.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

Okay…at the time we thought it was a good idea. We’d spent a lot of time crammed into the Jeep, effort, and $$ for gas trekking across the beautiful British Columbia landscape. We figured an aerial view from an airplane would be a short cut. Think of all the ground we could cover in such a short time!

Topless and Good Samaritans

Topless…imagine…(the Jeep….not the two girls), forestry roads, dust-grime-dirt on everything!!! 100km of pot holes, boulders, and bovine…we could have walked faster! Never take someone’s word when they tell you a short cut, insist it’s paved, and rave about the view. Good start to our 7000 km search for suitable land to create our Middle Earth Home. Add to that a music festival in the middle of ‘No Vacancy’ signs… town… after town… after town.

The First Step, is Deciding

The First Step is always the hardest. It’s a leap of faith, a dream, a thought that leads to an action. Monica and I were sitting in our trusty Sahara YJ that we’ve nick named ‘Pearl-the Wonder Jeep’. So it was on one such outing with the wind in our hair and bugs in our teeth (for Pearl is also a convertible) that we conceived The Great Canadian Dream.

Converting Solar Energy into Electricity

There is A LOT going on out there right now in the area of Solar Technology, especially since Peak Oil hit it’s peak. The race to find sustainable methods of meeting our energy demands around the planet is ON. Solar is one of a few Renewable Resources along with wind, wave, mechanical and bio-fuels. So long as there is sun we can utilize either its heat or its light to fulfill our energy needs. The solar market is shifting constantly with new innovations so we will explore some tried and true systems that have been on the market awhile for individual consumption, as well as emerging technologies stepping up to become power plants.

Candida Quiz-Do You Have the Following Symptoms?

What is Candida? Do you have Candida? Do you know the Symptoms, & Why should you Care? How do you know if Candida is affecting your lifestyle? It’s an over abundance of Bad Yeast in your body. Are you feeling lousy, sluggish, fog brained, irritable, wobbly, and itchy as hell most of the time?

Cob House Building

Have you ever looked at a cliff swallow’s nest and marveled at their cleverness? Nature once again offers us examples to emulate. The lovely thing about cob is how forgiving it is for the novice. Luckily most of us have experience with it as wee things playing pretend outside with mud pies. In fact I…

Our Long Range Plans for Middle Earth Home

Middle Earth Home may have started out as a small dream…a tiny, cute, cob cottage…However, the dream was fed some miracle grow and now we have something much bigger on our hands. It’s not the place we’re going to visit any longer. No, we plan on living there. For the region that we fell in love with we determined all the pros and cons of each type of structure, and decided that it came down to a bio dome or an Earth bermed/Rammed Home, and the cheerful indoor green house won! So now we have a vision of the space we’d like to create not just for ourselves, but also to be part of the local community.
